The North East is set to become a hub for the development of low-carbon technology in the UK with the launch of another pioneering project.
The New and Renewable Energy Centre (Narec) at Blyth will launch its Business Support in Micro-renewables project for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Micro-renewable technologies generate energy on a small scale, for example electricity capacity of up to 50kW or heat capacity up to 45kW. The project will cover a huge range of micro-generation, from solar thermal, combined heat and power systems to wind turbines and biomass.

The venture is the latest in a concerted drive from the region to promote itself as a world-leader in renewable energy advances, and is ideally placed to target foreign investors interested in getting a head-start in the industry.
The project is being part financed by the European Regional Development Fund 2007-13, which is supplying £495,000 through regional development agency One North East. The agency is matching this amount from its Single Programme.
Steve Caseley, Director of Distributed Energy at Narec, said: “This funding will help to break down the barriers that exist when we try as a region to develop the micro-renewables market.
“Similar measures have helped other European Countries, including Germany, to drive up a step change with their renewable energy production. We have a fantastic opportunity to replicate their success and we are passionate about making the North East region one of the UK’s leading low carbon technology developers.”
