Cumbria Rural Enterprise

The mission of the Cumbria Rural Enterprise Agency (CREA) is to regenerate and strengthen the rural economy by creating sustainable employment. It was established in 1984 with a small team based in Kendal but it now has offices in both Kendal and Penrith. CREA has increased its portfolio of services to include Business Advice (start-up & existing businesses), Cumbria Farm Link, Distinctly Cumbrian, the Rural Planning Facilitation Service, the Cumbria Business Environment Network and the Resource Efficiency Programme.

In addition the new food technology centre was officially opened by HM The Queen in June 2008 and represents an investment of £1.5 million in the local Cumbria food and drink sector.

Working out of the new food technology centre, CREA has instigated several public sector procurement projects to support Cumbrian businesses with a particular focus on DEFRA’s Public Sector Food Procurement Initiative. Also, through collaboration with other partners such as Government Office for the North West, Business Link, Cumbria County Council and NHS North West Collaborative Procurement Hub, wider activity has been conducted to encourage all local businesses to focus on public sector procurement.
